MAYOR ASKS BANKS TO DO THEIR PART IN PREVENTING BLIGHT AND KEEPING FORECLOSED PROPERTIES SAFE

(3/30/2009) NEW HAVEN—Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. sent letters to 39 banks and mortgage holders last week asking them to do their part during these difficult economic times by keeping foreclosed properties, that they now own, safe and clean. The City has been proactive in passing an ordinance to have banks register foreclosed properties and assume regular maintenance of these properties as the number of foreclosures in the City has exponentially increased over the past year.

“We believe that we all must act together to protect these foreclosed properties as assets fundamental to the restoration of a vibrant economy. Hence, the City of New Haven is seeking to enlist your corporation in this mutual endeavor,” wrote DeStefano in his letter.

DeStefano specifically asked banks to:

•Register foreclosed properties in accordance with the City’s Residential License Ordinance through the Livable City Initiative (203-946-6437) which will allow the City to assist them in keeping informed about the condition of the properties and to be able to contact them in the event of an emergency. City Ordinance Chapter 17 Article XV

•Secure vacant properties to limit liabilities and the possibility of illegal activities.

•Perform the necessary ‘code-related’ repairs on buildings to help with the elimination of blight and the promotion of health and safety.

•Keep responsible tenants in place…an occupied house is in the best interest of both the City of New Haven and the property owner.

The Livable City Initiative will remain in active communication with the banks and other mortgage holders to ensure that they are keeping up with their foreclosed properties and that anti-blight and housing code regulations are adhered to.
